5 reasons to tweet at events

I recently answered a question regarding the value of Twitter for marketers at events, and whether we should use the channel at the expense of face-to-face.

Yes of course marketers should tweet at events. It’s a bit like asking if they should carry business cards or wear a name badge. It’s rapidly becoming the best way to connect pre, during or post show; especially by following the hashtag, to see what everybody else is up to, give them an insight to your company, and share updates.

To take just five reasons from a recent CleverTouch event:

1/ we tweeted pre TFM&A event (automatically updating our LinkedIn profiles) resulting in an additional 2 meetings being scheduled

2/ we tweeted during the event to the hashtag #tfma, resulting in several people coming by the stand, referencing our Twitter news

3/ we announced our new Joined-Up-Marketing Hub over Twitter which lead to a couple of partner discussions from as far afield as the US

4/ at a personal level; I tweeted during an event seminar and was immediately followed by my neighbour, whose acquaintance I made far more easily than I would had we been sat as two strangers with no obvious opening line

5/ I gained followers, as did @CleverTouch. And whilst it’s not about numbers, events are the best places to connect with other relevant industry people, be it customers, partners, fellow marketers, competitors or recruits. And then you know you are sharing your news with the right people

In short, Twitter is simply a massive bonus and facilitator in terms of outreach and engagement. It really is a no-brainer – it’s easy to do and supplements and supports face-to-face. If you don’t do it, your prospects, colleagues and competitors will – only you won’t be part of the conversation.
